Navigating credit card payments in Japan can be confusing, especially when you are suddenly asked to choose between Ribobarai and Bunkatsubarai at the checkout counter or on your banking app. In this quick guide, we break down exactly how these two common payment methods work so you can shop smart and avoid financial traps. Read on to demystify your Japanese credit card and take full control of your monthly expenses!

Understanding Ribobarai (Revolving Payments)

Ribobarai is a revolving credit system where your monthly payment amount is fixed, regardless of how much you spend.

For example, if you buy a new iPhone and set your Ribobarai payment to ¥5,000, you will only pay ¥5,000 every month until the balance is cleared.

The Pros:

  • Total Flexibility: You can easily adjust your monthly payment course. If you want to pay more, you can jump from ¥5,000 to ¥10,000 or ¥50,000 a month via your credit card app.

  • Early Payoff Option: You can use a feature called Matomete Oshiharai to pay off your entire remaining balance in one single lump sum whenever you are ready.

The Warning (Fact-Check):

  • High Interest Rates: While the fixed monthly payment seems convenient, Ribobarai is notorious for carrying high compounding interest rates (often around 15% annually). If you set your monthly payment too low, you will end up paying significantly more than the item's original price.

Understanding Bunkatsubarai (Installment Payments)

Bunkatsubarai is a standard installment plan where the number of payments is fixed, rather than the monthly amount.

For example, if you buy an iPhone and choose "36 payments" (san-juu-rok-kai), the total cost of the phone (plus any applicable installment fees) is divided by 36.

How it Works:

  • Predictable Timeline: You know exactly when your debt will be completely paid off.

  • Fixed Monthly Amounts: Your monthly payment is strictly calculated based on the total price divided by your chosen number of months.

  • Safer for Big Purchases: This is generally the much safer, more transparent option for expensive items compared to Ribobarai. (Note: Paying in 2 installments is usually fee-free on most Japanese credit cards!)

Key Japanese Vocabulary

  • リボ払い (りぼばらい / Ribobarai): Revolving payment (fixed monthly amount)

  • 分割払い (ぶんかつばらい / Bunkatsubarai): Installment payment (fixed number of payments)

  • 回数 (かいすう / Kaisuu): Number of times / number of installments

  • まとめてお支払い (まとめておしはらい / Matomete Oshiharai): Lump-sum payment of the remaining balance
