Did you spend a little too much this month and realize you can't pay your full PayPay credit card bill all at once? Don't panic—PayPay allows you to adjust your payment amount or switch to installments directly through the app if you act before your billing cutoff date. Here is exactly how to lower your payment using the app, plus a backup method for reaching a live support operator if you missed the deadline.

Check Your Payment Adjustment Deadline

Before doing anything, you need to know your deadline. The cutoff date to change your payment amount varies depending on the bank account you have linked to your PayPay card.

  • Check your app immediately: Depending on your bank, your deadline will typically be the 10th, 15th, or 20th of the month.

  • If you haven't linked a bank account yet, your deadline is usually the 10th.

Method 1: Adjusting Your Bill Directly in the PayPay App

If you are still within your allowed adjustment period, this is the fastest way to lower your bill.

  • Open the PayPay app and swipe left to find the Card icon.

  • Tap on お支払い金額の調整 (Adjust payment amount).

  • Follow the on-screen prompts to change your payment method from a lump-sum payment to installments or a revolving payment.

  • If you see a blue button that says 確定 (Confirmed/Fixed), your bill has already been finalized, and you can no longer change it using this automated menu. You will need to use Method 2.

Method 2: Contacting Customer Support via Chat (If the App Method Fails)

If your bill is already finalized but you absolutely cannot make the full payment, you can try negotiating directly with a customer support operator via the in-app chat.

Important: You must do this between 9:30 AM and 5:30 PM. If you try outside of these hours, the chat will just loop endlessly without connecting you to a human.

Step-by-Step Chat Instructions:

  • Tap 管理 (Management) in the bottom right corner of the app.

  • Select お客さまサポート (Customer Support).

  • Tap the blue icon and select お支払い金額の調整 (Payment amount adjustment).

  • Choose the option 今月のお支払い金額を減らしたい (I want to reduce this month's payment amount).

  • Select オペレーターに接続する (Connect to an operator).

What to Expect During the Chat

Once connected, the operator will ask you to verify your identity. Have the following information ready:

  • Your credit card details

  • Your registered address

  • Your date of birth

  • Your registered phone number

Simply tell the operator how much you can afford to pay. For example, if you can only pay 20,000 JPY this month, you can type: 「2万円しか払えないです」 (I can only pay 20,000 yen). The operator will help you adjust the remaining balance.

⚠️ A Quick Warning About Reducing Payments

Fact Check & Financial Warning: In Japan, "adjusting" or "reducing" your monthly credit card bill means you are switching to リボ払い (Ribo-barai / Revolving payments) or installments. While this saves you from missing a payment, revolving payments come with high annual interest rates (usually around 15%). Only use this feature in emergencies, and try to pay off your remaining balance as quickly as possible to avoid falling into a debt trap.
